Congratulations to Thom Mills! 2016 Associated Schools of Construction Outstanding Researcher

Thomas Mills, Associate Professor of Building Construction, Myers-Lawson School of Construction, in Virginia Tech’s College of Architecture and Urban Studies has been selected as The Associated Schools of Construction 2016 Outstanding Researcher. This award is made annually to a research faculty member of a four-year ASC member University.

Best Paper of 2015 Award

Dong Zhao (VT '14 grad and 2015 postdoctoral fellow) and Andrew McCoy, along with Chief Economist Jonathan Smoke of Realtor.org, received the Best Paper of 2015 Award from the Architectural Engineering Institute (AEI)

BC 1214 Featured in Virginia Tech Magazine

The BC 1214 class is featured in the Winter 2015-2016 Virginia Tech Magazine! These students worked with Professor Thomas Mills and academic advisor Renee Ryan to search for solutions to the refugee housing crisis.

Fall 2015 Design / Build Capstone

The Fall 2015 Design / Build Senior Capstone Project took place Wednesday, December 9, 2015 in Bishop-Favrao Hall. The Fall 2015 capstone project scope included the renovation of Building 30, a contributing resource to the Norfolk Naval Shipyard Historic District and a Category 2 historic property. The goal of the renovation was to find a balance between the Building and Life Safety Codes requirements, ATFP, Energy and State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) requirements while meeting the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.

BC / Real Estate Student Wins Student of the Year Scholarship

Joseph Jajonie of Virginia Beach, Virginia, a Virginia Tech senior pursuing dual bachelor's degrees in building construction and real estate, received the 2015 Student of the Year Scholarship from the Institute of Real Estate Management and the IREM Foundation.

The scholarship recognizes outstanding students who have shown academic achievement and an interest in pursuing a career in real estate management.

Spring 2015 Design Build Senior Capstone

The Spring 2015 Design / Build Senior Capstone Project took place Wednesday, May 6, 2015 in Bishop-Favrao Hall. The 2015 capstone project scope included the design and construction of a new single-story dining facility at Fort Meade in Maryland. The structure would accommodate 800 persons in three sittings per day. Student proposals included a technical proposal that was evaluated on facility design, site design, a facility engineering narrative, schedules, and project management, as well as a cost proposal and a small business subcontracting plan.

Building Women in Construction

Building Women in Construction is a new philanthropic organization in the Department of Building Construction. Their mission is to inspire women to become future leaders in construction through personal, professional, and academic successes. Their purpose is to unite women students studying construction-related disciplines and help provide additional support and resources to help women succeed in this field of study. The group was founded this semester and already has fourteen members, including five executive members and four faculty members.

Building Construction Student Wins Team Real Estate Competition

Chris Lomaka, a junior double majoring in Building Construction and Real Estate, was part of a team of students who won first place in the second annual Meritage Homes Residential Real Estate Challenge hosted by the University of Arizona's Eller College of Management. This is the second win for a Virginia Tech team in this competition.

"The Meritage Residential Real Estate Challenge was a great opportunity, as it furthered my knowledge of the built environment outside the classroom."

Study Abroad Trip - 2015

The Department of Building Construction offered its 13th annual interdisciplinary Winter Education Abroad Program through Spain and Portugal. Students and faculty travelled for 16 days to explore various cities in Spain and Portugal including, Lisbon, Madrid, Toledo, Seville, Granada, Sintra, Obidos, Merida, Evora and Elvas. Through the integrated self-learning and team-based approach students were exposed to the technical, social, and cultural aspects across the Iberian Peninsula.
