Fall 2015 Design / Build Capstone

The Fall 2015 Design / Build Senior Capstone Project took place Wednesday, December 9, 2015 in Bishop-Favrao Hall. The Fall 2015 capstone project scope included the renovation of Building 30, a contributing resource to the Norfolk Naval Shipyard Historic District and a Category 2 historic property. The goal of the renovation was to find a balance between the Building and Life Safety Codes requirements, ATFP, Energy and State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) requirements while meeting the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.

Student proposals included a project safety plan, floor plans of the proposed design solution, building elevations and a 3-D model of the renovated building, design management plan, project management plan, CPM project schedule, and cost estimate. In addition, the teams presented their technical solutions to hazardous material abatement, door and window renovation and restoration. The proposal also detailed procedures for cleaning and repointing the 150-year-old masonry walls and the repair and reinforcement of the end walls.

The Orange Team took first place and team members included Dan Barker, Will Beaman, Alex Hargrave, Reid Miner, Ed Rossell, and Carson Stephens. The Blue Team took second place and team members included James Browning, Morgan Esters, Bryan Kress, Dan Moore, Clark Olsen, and Jon Whitby. The Maroon Team took third place and team members included Gabrielle Bishop, Richard Fronczak, Tyler Lewis, James Pace, John Szukelewicz, and Brian Wade. Professor Yauger noted that all teams performed to the highest quality and scoring was extremely close.

The department would like to thank Bob and Janice Wells and Virtexco Corporation for sponsoring the Fall 2015 Capstone presentation and awards.
