Myers-Lawson Construction Programs Earns Top Rankings

Giving Back Globally

Its always great to connect our students to opportunities that allow them to travel abroad, immerse themselves in different cultures and practice their construction skills. Over winter break, a group of students traveled to Peru while another group traveled to Rwanda.

Fall 2018 Senior Capstones

At the end of the fall semester, seniors completed their Fall 2018 Design/Build Senior Capstone project. The Fall 2018 capstone project scope of work included a full Design Build service proposal for a high rise office building in Alexandria, Virginia. The building will host 4,300 employees and provide conference and meeting facilities for the 6,000 visitors each year. The building must also provide a designated parking area as required by the City of Alexandria.

Students Place at 2018 Fall ASC Competition in Georgia

38 students, faculty and staff members associated with the Myers-Lawson School of Construction traveled to Peachtree, Georgia to compete at the Fall 2018 Associated Schools of Construction Student Competition. Virginia Tech competition teams included a Heavy Team, Commercial Team, Concrete Team, Design Build Team, Shadow Team and Graduate Team. All teams are stationed in “war rooms” for 12 straight hours and are equipped with all supplies necessary to carry out a specified project within their scope of focus.

Kaloudis Wins Aspire! Award

Once a semester at Virginia Tech, five students and one faculty member are recognized with Aspire! awards. Aspire! awards represent Virginia Tech’s five aspirations for student learning. These aspirations are Courageous Leadership, Civility, Curiosity, Self Understanding and Integrity and Ut Prosim.

PhD Candidate Gives Presentation at BEHAVE 2018

Philip Agee, a PhD candidate within Virginia Tech’s Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, traveled to Switzerland’s Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) to attend BEHAVE 2018. This is the 5th European Conference on Behavior and Energy Efficiency. His trip and research was supported by Dr. Andrew McCoy, Head of the Department of Building Construction, Director, of the Virginia Center for Housing Research at Virginia Tech and Dr. Freddy Paige, Assistant Professor VCEMP/Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

BC 2044 Students Tour ACME Panel in Radford, VA

Students enrolled in the BC 2044 course toured the ACME Panel in Radford, Virginia. BC 2044 is a second year core class in construction materials. This course teaches students about materials and properties that they’ll be using on the job site. It allows students to investigate and experiment with the properties and behavior of building materials. Besides the classical building materials such as steel, concrete and wood, there are a variety of new building materials to investigate.

Student Summer Internship Spotlight: Don Riblet

Don Riblet is a senior majoring in Building Construction within the Myers – Lawson School of Construction. This past summer he interned with Kiewit. WayUp, a website for college students and recent grads seeking jobs and internships, listed Kiewit as one of the top 100 places to intern. Don spent his time with Kiewit working in the Underground District. They have been a leader within the tunneling industry for over 50 years. Their projects focus on transportation, environmental facilities, power, mining, bridges and telecommunications.

Student Summer Internship Spotlight: David Harrington

David Harrington is a senior majoring in Building Construction and Real Estate. He spent this past summer interning with Centennial Contracting. The have more than 30 offices nationwide and serves institutions, government agencies and the private industry. They are a member of the Bilfinger Engineering and Services Group and are the nation’s foremost practitioner of Job Order Contracting project delivery.
