Project Engineer Internship with Grunley Construction Company (Washington, DC) 2021-

New Construction: National Foreign Affairs Training Center Building B

Out of his first year in the Myers-Lawson School of Construction, Zack secured an internship with one of DC's most prominent General Contractors. Zack was assigned to a new construction building in Arlington, VA, for the US Department of State. The project was a steel building for office and educational use by the USDOS. Zack was lead in coordination and document control on major aspects of work. Within his first few weeks, he managed subcontractors and suppliers. He was working with the team to complete confirmation and review documents for division 10 &11 trades. Following this, he managed the door/hardware coordination for over 400 door openings in the highly secure building. This required working closely with our State Department contracting officers, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure the smooth and lean installation of high-security doors. He also assisted the team in the field with layout, dewatering, drawing updates, and collection of progress photos/scans.

Following his second year at the Myers-Lawson School of Construction, Zack took a role with Turner Construction Company. Engineering News-Record has ranked Turner the number one general builder in the country—and an industry leader across a diverse range of market segments and sub-disciplines. Turner has earned a spot in the top 10 every year since 1964.

Zack's project for the summer was the Fort Lauderdale International Airport, and he was in a project/cost management role. The project was trying to wrap up after a six-year construction duration. The push to "closeout" partners, subcontractors, and vendors was the primary task for the summer. Zack ultimately took on 15 different subcontractors as his responsibility; he was to submit final documents, final bills and reconcile any outstanding change orders. Zack conducted a detailed audit of the GMP budget, looking for unspent differential funds that needed to be reallocated. Zack was also responsible for creating as-built documents of existing conditions, creating/monitoring punch list items from the project architect, and updating project drawings with revisions.
