Jacob Porter
My name is Jacob Porter and I am a Junior pursuing a double major in Building Construction and Real Estate.
One of the main reasons I chose to attend Virginia Tech is because I grew up only 20 minutes away, and it was an obvious choice for me. Until my senior year of high school, I did not know what I wanted to major in. It wasn’t until I found the Building Construction department and came to an info session with Senior Advisor Gary Kinder that I knew I found my home. I met with the student ambassadors at the time and asked them all the questions I could think of, which is what I hope to do for anyone that is in the same position I was in: unsure of where their life was heading.
With this program, I have gained a lot of knowledge from the classroom but also an unbelievable amount of experience from internships throughout my summers. During the school year, we have two construction-specific career fairs with more than 100 companies in attendance. Through this event, I have received multiple internship opportunities and taken two so far, gaining practical experience and making good money at the same time. Every single company that I have talked to and worked for prefers higing VT Building Construction students and graduates.
